Finding beauty in the ordinary.
That’s my aim in life. My belief. The late Saul Leiter said “I happen to believe in the beauty of simple things. I believe that the most uninteresting thing can be very interesting”
For me that beauty exists in the ordinary people that we pass each day, in the urban landscape that we live in. Our urban areas with their laneways, streets and squares provide a rich tapestry. A tapestry in which the characters are real, their background often ordinary, yet fascinating.
Through out my projects I have aimed to observe, to capture the ordinary, to see the wonder. The concept of sonder, which emphasises that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and as complex as you own, is central to my street photography. The person in the photograph is far more than the flat one dimensional depiction, they are multi-layered, complex people whose images raise a multitude of questions within me.
I hope my photographs raise the same questions within you and help you to find the beauty in the ordinary.
